There are 3 species of Elephants: the Asian Elephant, the African Bush (or Savannah) Elephant, and the African Forest Elephant. Elephants live between 60 and 80 years. They eat up to 300 pounds, or 120 kilograms of roots, grasses, fruit, and bark every day.
Elephants are one of the most intelligent animals on earth, with highly developed spatial and emotional awareness. They often display humor, compassion, cooperation, self-awareness and playfulness. They use tools, and often show altruism toward other creatures, for example, by rescuing other animals from danger, at considerable risk to themselves.
Elephants and humans are the only creatures on Earth that have rituals surrounding illness and death. If a wild elephant becomes sick, other elephants in its herd will bring it food and water, and help support it so it can stay on its feet. If an elephant dies, the herd will try to revive it with food and water, often for many hours. Then the whole herd will become very quiet, often digging a shallow grave and covering the body with earth and branches.
Sadly, these huge, amazing creatures are in danger of extinction in the wild. The number of wild African Bush and Forest Elephants has fallen by more than 50% in the last 25 years, and all 3 species are on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature “Endangered Species” Red List.
(Elephants also take wonderful care of their babies. For more about elephants, check out our Baby Elephant and Baby Asian Elephant.)
